First, the bad news . . . due to the weight of your growing baby and changes in your hormones, hemorrhoids are normal during pregnancy.
The good news? You can treat them and find relief during pregnancy AND expect them to resolve completely about 4-6 weeks after your baby is born.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins on or around your anus that develop from pressure on your pelvic area. A growing baby, increased blood volume, and constipation caused by hormonal changes can all result in more pressure. Hemorrhoids can be internal or external. Some people have hemorrhoids without any symptoms, but symptoms can include:
Itchiness
Painful bowel movements
Blood (on the toilet paper or in the stool)
How can I treat hemorrhoids?
Here are some effective ways to treat hemorrhoids during pregnancy:
#1 Eat more fiber each day (about 25-30 grams). You can get 25 grams of fiber from 100 grams of whole grains, 1 cup of cooked beans, 2-3 serves of fruit, or ½ cup of spinach or kale.
#2 Drink 8-12 cups of water a day (64-96 ounces).
#3 Apply pure aloe or coconut oil to ease the pain.
#4 Sit in a tub of warm water to improve blood flow and reduce swelling.
#5 Don’t sit or stand too long. Consider using a donut pillow.
#6 If your medical provider approves, take a mild laxative.
Hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable, but they are not dangerous to you or your baby.
