Teamwork: Dads and Doulas

Are you considering adding a doula to your labor support team? Along with your doctor or midwife, nurse, and partner, having a doula help you prepare your birth plan and be present during labor and delivery is of great value.

How are the Roles of Dad and Doulas Different?

Your partner knows you best. Partners can help you by being present, offering support, rubbing your feet, and helping you stay hydrated. Because of your close and intimate relationship you may be most comfortable asking your partner for what you need. Your partner is essential in decision making, especially if it feels like a big decision that needs to be made quickly.

If this is the first baby, your partner might experience nervousness or fear. Having a doula on the team can allow partners to participate at the level at which they are comfortable.

Doulas, who have a lot of experience with labor and delivery as well as knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum needs, provide physical and emotional support. Unlike doctors and nurses who have to check on other patients and roll off at the shift change, your doula will be with you throughout labor and delivery. At the first signs of labor, your doula can come to your house or meet you at the hospital.

In addition, a doula’s subject area expertise allows her to explain what is happening and answer all your questions. Many doulas also have areas of specialization like lactation, home birth, giving birth to multiples, and placenta encapsulation. A doula never “takes over” or makes decisions for you; instead, she makes sure you have everything you need through the process: encouragement, information, comfort measures, etc.

Doulas can also support your partner who may be sleep deprived, have questions, or be nervous or fearful seeing you going through the trials of labor.
