Taking Care of Yourself while Taking Care of Your New Baby

After the experience of pregnancy, labor, and delivery, your body has been through many changes. As you heal and begin to adjust to this new season with your new baby, it is vital that postpartum self care—alongside care for your baby—is a priority.

Let’s look at three areas of self care that are key to new moms.

Rest

People often say, “Sleep when your newborn sleeps.” This can be challenging, especially if you have other children or responsibilities.

Rest, however, will help you both physically heal and get emotionally stronger. So, take time to rest whether that is napping, sitting down for a few minutes, getting to bed early, or sleeping when your baby sleeps.

Spending time outdoors, taking short walks, or doing appropriate exercises can also help your body heal and help you to sleep better.

Nutrition

A healthy and balanced diet will also help you to feel better and gain energy after your baby is born. Don’t worry about losing “baby weight;” instead, focus on healthy, easy-to-grab snacks, satisfying meals, and staying hydrated (especially if you are nursing your baby).

Remember, fiber, protein, and calcium are all very important.

Support

When it comes to support, it can be hard to ask for what you need and accept help that is offered, but allow yourself to do both.

If you need something, ask a friend or family member for help. If someone offers to bring a meal, pick up groceries, tidy your house, or watch your baby while you rest, say “yes.”

A little bit of help can go a long way in allowing you the selfcare you need.
